Create a working QR code in under a minute. By the end of this guide, you'll have a scannable code that links to any URL.
What you'll need
- A URL you want the code to link to
That's it. You can create static QR codes as a guest—no account required.
However, we recommend creating a free account if you plan to use dynamic QR codes later. Without an account, dynamic codes won't be saved to your Dashboard. It takes under 30 seconds. See: How to create a FreeQR account
Step 1: Click Create
Go to FreeQR and click Create.
Step 2: Choose Static QR code
You'll see two options: Dynamic QR code and Static QR code.
Choose Static QR code for your first code. It's the simplest option—your code links directly to a URL.
Step 3: Enter your URL
Paste or type the web address you want the code to link to.
Double-check it's correct. Static codes can't be changed after creation.
Step 4: Choose a design
Pick a preset design or keep the default black-and-white style. Presets give your code a polished look without extra work.
Want more control? You can customize colors, patterns, and add your logo. See: How to customize your QR code design
For your first code, the default works fine.
Step 5: Create and download
Click Create QR Code. Download your code as a PNG file.
Choose a resolution based on your use:
| Resolution | Best for |
|---|---|
| 320px | Small digital use |
| 640px | Web and documents |
| 960px | Standard printing |
| 1280px | Large format printing |
| 1920px | High-quality printing |
Important: Static QR codes are not saved to your Dashboard. Download your code immediately—once you leave this page, you can't retrieve it.
However, the code itself never expires. The URL is encoded directly in the pattern, so your downloaded code will work forever (as long as the destination URL exists).
Test it
Open your phone's camera, point it at the code, and tap the link. If it goes to your URL, you're done.
What's next
You've created your first QR code. Here's where to go from here:
Ready to create an account? If you continued as a guest, claim your account to save future dynamic QR codes. See: How to create a FreeQR account
Want your codes saved to your Dashboard? Create a dynamic QR code instead. Dynamic codes are saved, editable, and include scan tracking. See: Static vs dynamic QR codes
Want a landing page instead of a URL redirect? Dynamic codes include a built-in page builder. See: How to create a landing page
Ready to print? See: QR code size guide and Test before printing
Common questions
Will my static code expire?
No. Static codes work forever. The URL is stored in the code pattern itself—it doesn't depend on FreeQR's servers. As long as your destination URL exists, the code will work.
Can I find my static code later in my account?
No. Static codes are not saved to your Dashboard. If you didn't download it, you'll need to create a new one. For codes you want to manage from your account, use dynamic QR codes.
Can I change where my static code points?
No. Static codes are permanent. If you need to change the destination later, create a dynamic QR code instead.
Do I need to pay?
No. Static QR codes are free on FreeQR.
What's the difference between static and dynamic?
Static codes link directly to a fixed URL, aren't saved to your account, but never expire. Dynamic codes are saved to your Dashboard, can be updated anytime, and include scan tracking. See: Static vs dynamic QR codes
