A dynamic QR code lets you change where it points after you create it. The printed code stays the same, but the destination can be updated anytime.
The simple explanation
A regular (static) QR code stores the destination URL directly in the code pattern. The URL is baked into the design. Once you print it, there's no way to change where it goes.
A dynamic QR code works differently. Instead of storing your final destination, it stores a short redirect URL. When someone scans the code, they hit that redirect, which then sends them to your actual destination.
You control the redirect. Change the destination in FreeQR, and everyone who scans your printed code goes to the new location. The QR code image never changes.
Why it matters
Mistakes happen. URLs change. Campaigns evolve.
With a static code, any change means starting over. Create a new code, reprint everything, replace what you've already distributed. If you printed 1,000 flyers with the wrong link, you have 1,000 flyers pointing to the wrong place.
With a dynamic code, you update the destination in your FreeQR account. Takes about 10 seconds. No reprinting. No wasted materials. No awkward explanations.
Real situations where dynamic codes help
The typo fix: You printed business cards with a URL that has a typo. Update the redirect to the correct URL. Cards still work.
The URL change: Your website moved from example.com/menu to example.com/food-menu. Update once in FreeQR. Every printed code now points to the new location.
The campaign rotation: Your QR code on product packaging can point to different promotions throughout the year. Same code, different destinations based on the season.
The temporary event: Your event QR code pointed to registration before the event. Now point it to the photo gallery or feedback form.
How it works in FreeQR
FreeQR takes dynamic QR codes further than simple redirections. When you create a dynamic QR code, you get a built-in landing page that you can customize with:
- Text, images, and videos
- Contact details and social links
- Menus, product lists, and files
- Forms and embedded content
Here's the flow:
- You create a dynamic QR code
- FreeQR generates a unique URL (like
abc123.freeqr.io) - You build your landing page using templates or custom components
- When scanned, visitors see your landing page
- You can update the page content anytime from your Dashboard
Changes go live within seconds. No reprinting needed.
Want simple redirection instead?
If you just want to send people to an existing website, you can build a landing page with a Links component containing your business URLs. Or use our "Link to a website" template for a branded redirect experience.
When you need it (and when you don't)
You need dynamic codes when:
- You might need to change the destination later
- You want scan analytics (who scanned, when, where)
- You're printing codes on materials that are expensive to reprint
- You're running campaigns that evolve over time
You might not need dynamic codes when:
- The link will absolutely never change (rare)
- You want the smallest possible code (static codes can be simpler)
- You're doing a one-time, disposable use
- You need the code to work without any internet dependency
For most business uses, dynamic codes are the safer choice. The flexibility costs nothing on FreeQR's Free plan, and it saves real headaches.
The analytics bonus
Dynamic codes come with scan analytics. Because scans go through the redirect, FreeQR can record:
- Total number of scans
- When scans happened (date and time)
- General location of scans
- Device types (on paid plans)
Static codes can't track this information because the QR code points directly to the destination with no redirect in between.
Common questions
Do dynamic QR codes cost more?
Not on FreeQR. Dynamic codes are included in the Free plan.
Will dynamic codes stop working if I cancel my account?
No. Your QR codes continue to work even if you downgrade to the Free plan. We don't hold your codes hostage.
Is there any delay when someone scans?
The redirect happens in milliseconds. Users won't notice any delay.
Do dynamic codes look different from static codes?
No. The QR code image looks the same either way. The difference is in how it functions.
Can I convert a static code to dynamic?
No. The type is determined when the code is created. If you need to change from static to dynamic, you'll need to create a new code.
Getting started
Ready to create a dynamic QR code? It takes about a minute.
Go to your FreeQR Dashboard and click Create QR Code. By default, your code will be dynamic, giving you full flexibility to update the destination whenever you need.
